Toplist MOD for phpBB3: Comments beta

Major WoW Map updates pt. 1


With patch 3.0.2 just landed yesterday and some lads from Taiwan linking to my map, I decided to change the url from a map embedded in my site to a fullscreen (fullbrowser screen that is) version I started working on a few days ago. Also I did an export of the maps of the game after installing the patch yesterday. 1 thing that catched me eye is that Blizzard updated the minimap and made it brigther. I had to do an export for the new zepp towers at Org and UC anyway but when I noticed that made it brigther, work started to update the entire map. So after the Maelstrom a few days ago the next major update should hit live in a few days. Below is an image showing the difference between the old and new minimap:

WoW Screenshots Map disabled


The new style maps on the wow screenshot pages are there now for a while. People seem to like them alot as they startmoving them around and check out place in the world. For the moment they are disabled to correct a few issue's. There are some problems I would like to fix before putting them back on. They can be very bandwidth demanding so I'll be looking into using a mix of image type to have optimal bandwidth useage but keeping the quality up. Another thing that is going to be included are Instance maps (thanks to Dan Gilbert from atlasmod.com). The third issue are the markers. Currently they are only on a handfull of zones like Nagrand. (The maps will only be removed on screenshot pages, but will be available on the map page and the page pages since they are still usefull on those pages.) This upcoming change will also include (when available) 4 diget coords to improve acuracy.

Custom Google Map Tiles part 2/2: Slicing the tiles and creating the HTML



Time to create a Custom Tiled Google Map from out previous created World of Warcraft map. We'll do 3 maps in this tutorial. Starting with an easy of GTASA (Grand Theft Auto Sanandreas), then we'll make it a bit harder and make a Guild Wars map. After that we'll make a World of Warcraft map out of 4 parts. Below are the images needed for each map. With the GTASA I'll take you by hand over each step so you can get familier with the steps and give a short explanation of what each option/handling does. With the Guild Wars map we'll make a bigger map and with the World of Warcraft map we make a map out of 4 images and use some extra techniques to speed things up.

Water plus Home Server is a very bad combination


Sigh here we go again. Last night some water leaked from our aquarium on the floor. We pulled out everything on power when we noticed it. That plus probably the water killed my home server so for the next few days anything not cached on the site server (like screenshots images) are unavailable. A new server is allready arranged and should be up and running in a few days. I'll keep you posted.

Monthly Website Tips: Social March


Ok this area of work is kinda new for me. Never dugg into the social aspect of the web that much as a tech guy. But after some weeks of trying I booked some interesting results with it.

Forums

When looking into the other things (comments, digg(-clones)), and in particular looking through my access_logs. I found out that alot of people where checking out the sites I placed in my forum signature. After setting up a bit more advanced logging on this (phenomena). I found 2 different groups that where clicking. First the returning visitors (more then 1 visit) made out about 10 - 20% of the incoming hits from forums. The other 80 - 90% goes to the new visitor. So putting links in your forum signature is certainly worth the little effort.

Comments

Posting comments has the same effect as a forum signature. When posting a constructive (or just a positive) comment on a post/article/entry people tend to check out your site. This will have a positive effect on the number of visitors your getting.But again make sure to post something useful/constructive.

World of Warcraft Gold (A bfrief history of NoGold.org and how I got involved)


For me this started all in the early days when gold sellers started to spam and bugged me to death with it. With Adsense ads on my site I soon found out that Gold Seller adds where showing on my site. So I started adding them to the Adsense blacklist. After a while I filtered out all (for that moment) sites and placed the first version of my list on my blog. After a while I ran into NoGold.org (the old site), at that time it wasn't really much used and irony was that they got spammed on their forums by gold sellers all the time. Last year when Rollie from WarCraftRealms.com took over the Azzor.com network I got the change to make something out of it. Rollie installed a WP install and at first we had a simple default list of sites. After some months when more and more people become active on the site the list grew and we even had to create a second list of currently active sites on Google's Adsense . And now Blizzard finaly made a statement on the official World of Warcraft websites.

    Toplist 2.1 release date

    Bad Mojo Ressurected (Frankenstein style)


    After some trying and moving files around I got a temporary solution (until I get a new server) for the problems. As we speak I'm uploading the data files to a secondary server that has taken over the role of file server. This solution will be altered a bit when I get my new server to create a more fail proof situation. The screenshots itself might a bit longer to get online properly again. Until that time I hope the most viewed ones are all in the cache.

    After trying to get everything back in order I gave up trying to get the disc itself to work again. It's unable to boot from it but I can read from it using a live CD. Preparing my workstation to take over the HTTP server so I can open up the wow_db and wow_screenshots section again.

    Bad Mojo Revisited


    So after posting the previous blog post I did some checks with my home server before I had to go to work. And it completely died before my eyes. It went from a complete free, to a kernel panic to a complete failure of the system. When I get home tonight I'll place the harddisks from the server into the old one and get everything up and running that way. When installing the dead one I made the decission to using hotplug hardware detection instead of setting what drivers to load by hand. I'm so happy with doing that now cause it basicly means I can swap the harddisks plug everything in and fire it up without problems.

    Bad Mojo


    Great a few bad things happend the last 12 hours. First of all the blog post I was preparing yesterday night failed to get into the database so I can start all over again today. Secondly the electric company blew out a phase putting half the building (and including me) without power. That resulted in a down and eventually damaged how server. Due to that all the wow_screenshots and wow_db pages that aren't in the cache are unavailable. Probably I have to recompile the servers kernel when I get back home tonight from work. I'll keep you posted.

    When browsing WPCandy today I came along a post about Gravatar. Gravatar provides a service that shows (when the site has the plugin installed for it) on sites you post comments on with your email. After reading into it a bit more I decided to add it to my site also. Recently Gravatar has been acquired by Automattic (the company behind WordPress and Akismet), promising some exciting new features. But for now I just implemented the current API Cool. And it's for sure something to keep an eye on in the future Wink.

    Mods Base


    I have suspended the development of Mods Base 1 and started working on Mods Base 2. Mods Base 2 will be a light micro API and won't require to install an additional MOD. All MB2 files will be deliverd with the MOD that requires it. So that users don't get botherd with some extra thing to install. Wich was a great deal to me aswell since alot of people complaint about it. This means MAriage MOD 2 is delayed a bit (it is for a few years allready anyway), so t hat I can adjust it :).

    grep is uber!


    After preparing the databases for the move. Something went wrong with a file upload so I lost a last minute tool to update the old user_id in the table that contains the wiis. To the new upper level user system. Stupid enough I was about to save a it to the server when the connection died and my editor went down aswell.. After some researching I found out that with "grep -a "text to find" /dev/hda1" (where /dev/hda1 is the partition with the removed file) you can recover data under linux without having to do anything heavy.

    XDS bug


    Found a nasty little bug in the XDS system (wich handles the sessions between multiple domains). So only the WyriHaximus.net design update will go live now. Since the XDS system still is in a beta stage I rather fix this up before going live. Sorry for the extra delay.

    Re: HD-DVD Key Google Bom


    As I said in my last message I would follow the google bomb. It has progressed from 20.000 somthing pages to over 1.5M now. Maybe in time, since the big explosion just happend and there is a good change google is still indexing pages, that it will raising to 3M or 4 M. I'll keep everyone posted :D.

    HD-DVD Key Google Bom


    So the HD-DVD Key has (09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0) been cracked and is currently Google bombed. Found out after reading kikr's post. At the moment I'm writing this post the current number of pages that Google finds is 21,800 but it will surely by way more in the future! We'll see what happens in the next few days. Surely Google will pick this bomb sometime soon.

    This is my first Google Bomb I'm aware of in a soon stage so it will be very interesting for me to follow this closely and see how it progresses!

    EDIT: Yahoo! seems to find alot more pages, 134,000.

    mail2wii script coming soon


    Since I got a Wii since 2 days I figured out that in some cases you don't want to add everyone that might send you an email to you Wii. So I made up a script that checks a POP3 box every 15 minutes (about the same interval the Wii checks). If it finds any emails in the POP3 box it checks if it's sended to the Wii or if it's coming from the Wii. If it's send to the Wii it will store the email address and the subject in a table. Then it adds the row ID to the top of the email. When you read the email on your Wii remember the number for when you send a reply. If you send a reply place the number on the first line of the reply, then press enter and type the rest of your reply. When you send it away it gets picked up by the gateway script again. But now it grabs the subject and email address from the database that match the number giving on the first line of the email. Then it places "Re: " in front of the subject from the database and sends it to the email address from the database. Also if you want to send a fresh email from your Wii to someone. You place the email address on the first line and the subject on the seccond one. Then add the message it self and select the entry in your that represents the email2wii gateway email address. When you send it the gateway will put the message together and send it to the email in the message with the subject on the seccond line.

    I changed the quality of all the fullsize screenshots to save bandwidth. The images are compressed as JPEG.15 now (wich is not pretty) but it stays readeble and it saves up around 250KB to 300KB per image of filesize and bandwidth.

    I was using google (suprise suprise Cool) to find a nice simple and easy script to create tabs. I found it in the way of Tabtastic. Quickly after installing it I found out when clicking on a tab it was moving the scrollbars to the right place on the page. Wich is irritating when you try to fill out a form.     Lead PHP devs stops for unclear reasons

    Yesterday nigth I foundout that 2 spammers posted useless bullshit on my forums again. Tired of having to delete the post, change the password, remove website and IM details. I wrote a simple but powerfull mod that exterminates a user (the spammer) with a single click. (Note that this is a last resort way to deal with them since there is no confirmation on this and it's inreverible except when you got backup.)

    The meaning of FFS


    FFS means For Fuck Sacke. And is mostly used in situations that don't go well. Like today for me we tryed to get a UTP Cat 5 network cable through a fireslowing door. Cause we couldn't get the cable through the tube. Cause there isn't a tube beneath the floor just loose wires. So in de and it was a FFSed day.     Hey just got back from my company dinner. We went to a Japanese restaurant in Alkmaar. Great place to go to. We settled down around 18:30 and left at around 22:45. The cooks made the food at the same 'table' as where we where eating. He made some nice entertainend out of it to, including trowing eggs at us >_<.     Google gone mad


    Well it seems like google gone mad. When I used the standard FF search bar in the upper richt I got that >_<. It seems google.com just blocks when you do a search without using hl=en as argument. A example. The URL http://www.google.com/search?q=forumstyles gives an error. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=forumstyles does work fine. An extra side note that http://www.google.com/search?q=forumstyles&hl=en also doesn't work. So it seems to look like it google wants you to use a very strickt pattern of arguments in your URL to perform a search.

    It's been a while since my last post. But I didn't had the time to post.
    I've been working on BA, MB and enjoying my vacation. Razz Since last week I'm on a trainig period at a company. I'm coding there intranet site, including the design of it Very Happy border=.
    Also almost done with MB 0.0.2 including no mre need to empty the cache everytime Smile. Also I changed the config parsing. the method of the data te retreive is now defined at the same place as the function to retrieve it from instead global for the whole config. But I let the global option possible but it's overruled by the other one. Smile

    Carting and MB


    Hi all,

    Yesterday I went carting with some house mates Smile. Most of them only did 1 heat, but mich and I did 2 Smile. This resulted in muscle pain the next day (now Razz). But I had a great time there Very Happy border=. There are also photo's and I'll put them online as soon as I got them Smile.

    Together with A.I. Bot I fixed some errors in the cache system and working to get the copyright from the config working. I'm now just waiting till I get response form him that that works Smile.

    German IRC guest :/ ... progress on mods base


    Hi,

    I changed the hack base name to mod base, so it can fit in the mods dir. After that I changed it to mods base because of apache servers give trable with a directory named mod_base Wink. Gonne write cronjob support in it for for example sync functions or newsletters.

    I had some german user on my IRC support channel. This kinda thing mostly happen twice aweek but without the cursing :S. So please give me some mins to react if I'm there Smile.

    Fire alarm


    Hi,

    Some (problebly bored) school kids set off the fire alarm in my school building. So we all had to get out side and wait till some school teachers had check if everything is allride Anger. It was and after 15 minutes we could all get inside again. It was the 5th time this week :S.

    Good news from one of the testers: the new adoption featere I added works great. This featere allows the proposing member to select a other member from a list. This list is 100 members a page and if there are more they will put on a seccond page or a 3rth and so on Smile
